Site Permit Review Might Be Needed For Kozloduy New-Build, Says Regulator
Bulgaria wants to build two new Westinghouse AP1000 reactors at the existing Kozloduy site.

Bulgaria’s state-owned Kozloduy NPP New Build (KNPP-Newbuild), which is looking to deploy two new AP1000 pressurised water reactor units at the existing Kozloduy site, may need to reapply for a review of a site permit to accommodate a second new reactor, according to representatives of the national nuclear regulator.

In March 2023, Westinghouse Electric signed a memorandum of understanding with KNPP-Newbuild to begin planning for deployment of up to two AP1000 units and a working group was formed under the agreement.

The project for a new, seventh, reactor unit at Kozloduy dates back to 2012 and has a valid site permit and environmental impact assessment approval issued by Bulgarian authorities.
