Watchdog Calls On US Regulator To Improve Assessment Of Staffing Needs

A US government watchdog has called on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to identify critical staffing needs and assess where legislation can be used to help the agency retain and hire the staff necessary to support “mission needs”.

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) said in a report that the chair of the NRC, Ho Nieh, should direct staff to finalise the Nexus tool by the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 and assess where authorities granted under the Advanced Act can be used to help staffing issues.

The NRC began developing Nexus in 2025 to determine current workforce numbers, critical staffing gaps and skill needs throughout the agency.
