Canada-based uranium company Cameco said it is “disappointed and surprised” after being told that its joint venture in Kazakhstan, JV Inkai, has suspended production activity.

Cameco said its partner, Kazakhstan state uranium company Kazatomprom, and JV Inkai had told it on 31 December that production was being suspended as of 1 January 2025.

JV Inkai said it had not received an extension to a deadline to submit updated project documentation, an extension that was expected before the end of 2024.

“We were informed by Kazatomprom that the extension was not received as expected due to the delayed submission of the necessary documentation to the Ministry of Energy,” Cameco said.
