Spain’s Almaraz nuclear power station in the southwest of the country has been granted approval by the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) for both units to operate until 2030, and will now await a final decision from the government.

In a statement, the regulator said that it had analysed 29 documents covering 16 specialist areas and had concluded that the plants met the proper functioning, maintenance, safety and waste management standards for continued operations.

Almaraz is Spain’s oldest commercial nuclear power station, with Almaraz-1 beginning commercial operation in 1983 and Almaraz-2 in 1984.
