Spain must move into line with the world’s most industrialised nations in continuing to provide sustainable nuclear energy or risk facing a greater dependence on imported fuels, industry group Foro Nuclear has said.
The Madrid-based group’s annual report showed that Spain’s fleet of seven commercial nuclear power plants generated 51.84 TWh in 2025, or 19% of the country’s electricity generation, down about a percentage point from 52.4 TWh in 2024 due to refuelling schedules and market conditions.
Renewables produced 150.9 TWh in 2025, up from 148.9 TWh in 2024, with significant contributions coming from wind power with 58.8 TWh and solar energy with 53.8 TWh.
Spain’s government plans to shutter the country’s nuclear fleet between 2027-2035, although plant operators are calling for lifetime extensions.
