Spain’s nuclear industry group Foro Nuclear says the country should now align with the European Union following strong calls against the premature closure of plants which provide a clean energy solution in times of energy crisis.
On 22 April the European Commission said it would deliver a package of measures to alleviate the impact of surging fossil fuel prices caused by the conflict in Iran.
The EC also said that new small modular reactors (SMRs), and avoiding the premature retirement of existing nuclear capacity, could help reduce dependency on fossil fuels and help drive a clean energy transition.
