The operator of the Sendai nuclear power station in southern Japan shut down one of its reactor units on Monday because of a failure to meet the deadline for adding anti-terror safety facilities made mandatory after the 2011 Fukushima-Daiichi accident.

Kyushu Electric Power Company shut down Sendai-1, an 846-MW pressurised water reactor unit, in Kagoshima Prefecture, making it the first to go offline due to a delay in meeting the new regulations.

The company started a regular inspection earlier than scheduled on Monday to work on the requirement. It might have to shut down Sendai-2 in May for failing to meet the same requirement.
