Russian state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom is to examine options for the deployment of floating nuclear power plants in the far eastern region of Primorsky Krai – a federal district almost 6,450 km east of Moscow on the borders with China and North Korea.

Rosatom said in a statement it had signed an agreement with the provincial government to define the project’s scope, conduct a feasibility study, find locations and determine the financial, economic and technical parameters for the project.

Russia already operates two 35-MW KLT-40S reactor units onboard the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant moored at Pevek, an Arctic port town in the Chukotka region of Russia’s Far East.
