Franco-Dutch nuclear startup Thorizon and Dutch nuclear technology corporation NRG Pallas are aiming to start the pre-licensing phase for a planned Pioneer demonstrator nuclear plant in early 2027.

Thorizon said its objective is to apply to Dutch regulator ANVS (Autoriteit Nucleaire Veiligheid en Stralingsbescherming) next year for a licence to build Pioneer at NRG Pallas’ Energy & Health Campus site in Petten, the Netherlands.

The company said early dialogue will give ANVS time to “build knowledge” on molten salt reactor (MSR) designs and enables Thorizon to share its design choices before it submits the licence application.
