Lithuania’s nuclear decommissioning company Altra has completed the decommissioning of the Soviet-era Maisiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility with all radioactive waste, radionuclide-contaminated structures and contaminated soil have been removed and the site cleaned up and restored.

Altra, a subsidiary of the nuclear company Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, said Lithuania decommission the facility “in accordance with the highest international safety standards and using state-of-the-art technologies”.

The completion of all project, which took almost a decade, was officially confirmed by the State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (Vatesi), which cancelled the decommissioning licence for the facility, meaning it is no longer classified as a nuclear site.
