Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (Meti) has conditionally selected EX-Fusion, Helical Fusion, Linea Innovation and Starlight Engine for a programme that targets fusion reactor operation in the 2030s.

The programme is rolling out around $370m (€318m) in subsidies across selected projects by the end of February 2029, with formal grant decisions on allocations still to come.

The funding will meet commitments made in Japan’s 2023 nuclear fusion strategy, which targets power generation in the 2030s.
