The International Atomic Energy Agency will hold an extraordinary board meeting on 11 April in Vienna after warning against this week’s drone strikes on the Zaporizhizhia nuclear power station in Ukraine.

The IAEA board of governors’ decision to hold the meeting is in response to the demands of the Russian and Ukrainian IAEA board members. Both countries have denied responsibility for the drone attacks.

The IAEA published a statement from board chairperson Holger Federico Martinsen on 10 April saying: “I hereby notify the Members of the Board that a meeting of the Board has been arranged as follows: 3 p.m. CET.”

The IAEA also stated that the team of experts stationed at the Zaporizhzhia plant had verified on 9 April the impact of several drone attacks, reporting “hearing bursts of rifle fire followed by a loud explosion at 11:05am local time on 9 April”, the same time that the ZNPP later said an incoming drone had detonated on the roof of the facility’s training centre.
