US uranium enrichment startup General Matter has announced plans to build a $1.5bn (€1.2bn) uranium enrichment facility at the decommissioned Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant at the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Paducah site in Kentucky.

General Matter, which says it is the first privately funded US company to develop uranium enrichment technology, said it has signed a lease with the US Department of Energy (DOE) to build a commercial uranium enrichment facility at the Paducah site – the birthplace of America’s uranium enrichment industry.

It said it aims to begin enrichment at the new facility by the end of the decade.
