French nuclear company Framatome has received financial support of €10m ($10.7m) from the European Union to accelerate the development and delivery of a 100% sovereign European fuel for Russia-designed VVER pressurised water reactors operated in Europe.

The fuel project, known as the Safe and Alternative VVER European Project, or Save, brings together 17 stakeholders to secure the mitigation of fuel supply chain risks through the development and implementation of an alternative European solution.

The partners include the four utilities that operate VVER nuclear power plants: the Czech Republic’s ČEZ, Finland’s Fortum, Hungary’s MVM Paks and Slovakia’s Slovenské Electrárne.
