Fermi Energia, the privately-owned Estonian company looking to deploy two 300-MW GE-Vernova BWRX-300 small modular reactors (SMRs) in Estonia by 2035 is “currently focused on site selection,” Kalev Kallemets, the company’s chief executive officer, said in an interview.

“In Estonia, Fermi Energia’s current focus is on site selection, which is being carried out through the national designated spatial planning process initiated by the government of the Republic of Estonia in May 2025,” Kallemets said.

He said the process “consists of two phases: pre-selection of the location in 2026-2028, followed by more detailed site investigations at the selected location in 2028-2029. After the site is confirmed, Fermi Energia plans to apply for a nuclear construction licence in 2029 and begin construction in 2030.

Kallemets said that Fermi remained on track to start operation of its first unit by the end of 2035, as per the current schedule.
