The Belarusian-1 nuclear power plant has begun a period of experimental operation during which operators will gradually increase its power output while carrying out crucial tests and inspections.

Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom said tests and inspections will be carried out at various power levels up to 100%.

Rosatom said Belarus’s ministry of emergency situations had issued a permit for the start of the experimental operation stage and operators had begun to increase the plant’s output on 22 December.

Belarusian-1 is the country’s first commercial nuclear power reactor. A second unit is under construction at the same site, at Ostrovets near the border with Lithuania.
