First safety-related concrete has been poured for the nuclear island of the Lufeng-5 nuclear power plant, marking the official start of construction, China General Nuclear (CGN) said in an announcement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Lufeng-5 will be the first of two indigenous HPR1000, or Hualong One, pressurised water reactors planned at the site, in Guangdong province, southern China. Four CAP1000s are also planned.
The Generation III CAP1000 is China’s domestic version of the Westinghouse AP1000 design.
