Holtec International is interested in building a next-generation small modular reactor at the site of the former Oyster Creek nuclear power station in New Jersey, Associated Press reported.

Holtec owns Oyster Creek and is in the process of decommissioning the 619-MW GE BWR unit, which began commercial operation in 1969 and was shut down in September 2018.

Ownership of the facility was transferred from Exelon Generation to Oyster Creek Environmental Protection and Holtec Decommissioning International in July 2019.

AP quoted a Holtec spokesman as saying that part of its application to the Department of Energy for its advanced reactor demonstration programme, Holtec expressed interest in possibly locating one of its SMR-160 SMRs at the Oyster Creek site.
