US-based Holtec International said it is preparing to submit to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission a topical report covering the essential safety features of its SMR-160 small modular reactor design.

Holtec said in a statement the report is expected to be submitted to the NRC within ‘a few weeks’ and will cover the SMR’s passive core cooling system and the passive containment heat removal System.

According to Holtec, the topical report will be the first submittal made to the NRC to begin the licensing process for the SMR-160.
