The boron pumps at the Olkiluoto-3 nuclear power plant in Finland were “unexpectedly” turned on during a scheduled shutdown of the unit, operator Teollisuuden Voima Oyj said.

According to TVO, the 1,600-MW EPR plant was being shut down in accordance with its test production programme at approximately 11:00 local time on Tuesday.

“In connection with the planned shutdown, the boron pumps were turned on unexpectedly,” TVO said. It said the plant unit is in a safe state, and the reason for the boron pumps turning on is being investigated. “The situation did not cause any harm to people or the environment,” TVO added.
