The European Union’s fleet of 106 nuclear reactors in commercial operation in 13 countries produced 765,337 GWh of electricity – or about 26% of total electricity production – in the EU in 2019, according to statistics from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office.

The figures, which do not include the UK or Switzerland, show that nuclear remained the EU’s largest source of low-carbon electricity by fuel type. Eurostat figures for 2018 – the last year for which complete statistics are available – show that hydro was second to nuclear followed by wind.

Eurostat puts the overall share of renewables in the bloc’s energy production at 968,800 GWh in 2018.
