US president Joe Biden’s administration has finalised approval of a $1.1bn (€1.01bn) aid package to help keep California’s last operating commercial nuclear power station online.

The funding is a key pillar in the plan to keep the Diablo Canyon station producing electricity to at least 2030 – five years beyond its planned shutdown.

The current operating licence for Unit 1 was set to expire in 2024 and for Unit 2 in 2025.

In December the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission accepted an application from PG&E to operate the two units beyond 2024 and 2025 – and potentially for another 20 years.
