Findings in a UK study show that deploying renewables and nuclear for power and hydrogen production can facilitate rapid decarbonisation and reduced reliance on fossil fuels, Urenco chief executive officer Boris Schucht told an International Atomic Energy Agency side event on nuclear innovation at the UN Cop26 climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland

Mr Schucht said combining hydrogen and nuclear also leads to competitive costs and using heat and electricity together from a nuclear power plant for hydrogen production provides a clear cost advantage.

Mr Schucht presented findings from a September 2021 study commissioned by Urenco, a UK-based supplier of enrichment services and fuel cycle products, that highlighted how innovations in nuclear can support low-cost and low-carbon hydrogen production.
