An International Atomic Energy Agency team at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station has reported increases in military action near the facility and “open discussion” about offensives and counter offensives in the vicinity of the site, agency director-general Rafael Grossi told the board of governors on Monday (6 March).

“My simple question is: are we waiting for a nuclear emergency before we react?”, Grossi said.

He said the situation at Zaporizhzhia underscores the urgent need to establish a nuclear safety and security protection zone at the site.

“I have intensified my consultations with both parties and rely on your continued active support to achieve this important measure without further delay,” he said.
