As its first major commitment to a programme of small modular reactor development the UK government has said it intends to open the generic design assessment process to SMR technologies in 2021.

The GDA is the regulatory process through which developers can obtain approval for their proposed design approach.

In an energy white paper published on Monday the government said supporting the development of a supply chain now will increase the chances of having indigenous expertise capable of leading the world in developing the nuclear technologies of the future – SMRs and advanced modular reactors – a global market estimated to be worth approximately £250bn to £400bn by 2035.
