US-based Holtec’s small modular reactor technology, the SMR-300, has completed Step 2 of the UK’s generic design assessment (GDA), putting subsidiary Holtec Britain one step closer to deploying plants for an $11bn (€9.5bn) project in Nottinghamshire, England.
In September 2025, Holtec International, EDF in the UK and supply chain company Tritax announced their intent to work together to develop Holtec’s SMRs at the former Cottam coal-fired power station in Nottinghamshire, to power to new, advanced data centres. The project is scheduled to be online by the early 2030s.
The intent is to install “several sets” of SMR-300 units to provide power to new, advanced data centres on the 900-acre (365-hectare) site. Early proposals suggest a 1 GW data centre project.
The GDA was conducted by the UK’s Office for Nuclear Regulation, the Environment Agency, and Natural Resources Wales.
