The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced it has renewed the operating licences of the two-unit Hatch nuclear power station in Georgia for a further 20 years, allowing both reactors to operate for up to 80 years.
The NRC said Hatch-1, an 879-MW boiling water reactor (BWR) unit is now licensed to operate until August 2054 and Hatch-2, an 883-MW BWR, until June 2058.
The NRC said the decision was its second nuclear power plant licence renewal completed in under 12 months, following targets set under an executive order issued by president Donald Trump for faster licence renewal reviews. The rule cut the previous 18-month cycle by six months.
