The US House energy and commerce committee’s subcommittee on energy has passed six bills aimed at accelerating the development of new nuclear and establishing a robust domestic fuel supply chain.

Bob Latta, chairman of the bipartisan subcommittee, said that the bills would help to improve the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) licensing process and maintain momentum for nuclear deployment.

He said that five of the bills passed were amendments to the Atomic Energy Act and would eliminate unnecessary licensing steps and provide clarity to reviews in line with the 2024 Advance Act aimed at developing new nuclear in the US.

“A robust and growing American nuclear industry is vital to meet our nation’s rapidly increasing energy demand. A resilient nuclear supply chain is critical for US economic, energy and national security,” said Latta.
