The US state of New Jersey aims to build at least 1,100 MW of new nuclear and companies will have until the start of next year to present their plans following the passing of key nuclear procurement legislation.

The Power NJ Act, which has been signed into law by state governor, the Democrat Mikie Sherrill, follows the lifting of a 50-year moratorium on new builds in New Jersey in April.

The legislation launches the state’s procurement process for new nuclear energy and will establish a transparent, competitive process to evaluate proposals.

The bill passed both houses of the legislature unanimously with strong bipartisan support.
