US microreactor manufacturer Ampera has established an Australian subsidiary to import thorium to be converted into fuel for its reactors.

The Florida-based company said that Ampera Australia would import thorium to the US and would produce tri-structural isotropic (Triso) thorium fuel kernels required for its reactors at a yet to be decided location in Florida.

Ampera aims to produce hybrid fusion-fission microcreators using thorium to deliver 15-30 MW. The reactors could be used to provide power for AI, industry, maritime vessels and defence installations.
