US New Nuclear Generation Forecast To Increase By 33.6 GW Over Next 15 Years

Expectations for new nuclear capacity to 2039 among US reactor operators have surged by 44% over the past year with both large-scale plants and small modular reactors (SMRs) projected to rapidly expand, a survey by the Washington-based Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) has shown.

According to the trade association’s Future of Nuclear Power 2026 survey new nuclear capacity is forecast to grow by 33.6 GW until 2039.

The survey covered 21 companies operating all of the country’s 94 reactors as well as the single-unit Palisades plant, which is in the process of being restarted.
