The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $800m (€884m) in grants to accelerate the early deployment of advanced light-water small modular reactors (SMRs) in the US.

Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) will receive $400m in cost-shared funding for a GE Vernova Hitachi BWRX-300 nuclear plant and Holtec Government Services will receive $400m, also cost-shared, for SMR-300 deployment.

Federally owned utility TVA is planning to advance deployment of a BWRX-300 at the Clinch River nuclear site in Tennessee, as well as accelerate the deployment of additional units with utility Indiana Michigan Power and project developer Elementl Power.

Holtec plans to deploy two SMR-300 reactors at the Palisades nuclear station site in Covert, Michigan, demonstrating viability for additional orders both domestically and abroad.
