The US Department of Army will award up to $2.2bn (€1.9bn) in funds for five microreactor developers to build five reactors at military installations in the country with the first expected to come online by 2028.

The army said it expected to install over 20 microreactors in the coming years, bolstered by private sector funding. The microreactors will provide secure and reliable nuclear power and support a strengthening of US industrial capacity and technological leadership, it said.

The microreactors are to be built under the Janus Programme, which was launched in 2025 with the aim of deploying a microreactor at a military installation by the end of September 2028.
