The US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (Arpa-E) has announced the selection of eight projects to receive up to a combined $50m (€44m) to advance next-generation nuclear fuels.

The DOE said the projects will develop innovative approaches to fuel fabrication, testing and qualification to reduce fuel costs and accelerate commercial deployment of advanced reactors.

It said the announcement advances US president Donald Trump’s executive order, Reinvigorating the Nuclear Industrial Base, by strengthening America’s domestic nuclear industry and building a more secure, self-reliant nuclear fuel supply chain.
