Unit 3 at the Vogtle nuclear power station in the US state of Georgia has been synchronised and connected to the electric grid, making it the first AP1000 unit to generate electricity in the country and the first outside China, Georgia Power announced.

Grid connection is part of startup testing at the Vogtle-3 AP1000 plant. It is one of two units under construction at the site. Last month hot testing began at the identical Vogtle-4.

Unit 3’s grid connection follows initial criticality, reached on 6 March, when operators started the nuclear reaction inside the reactor, generating nuclear heat to produce steam.
