The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) Group has launched a strategy for nuclear fusion that includes completing a detailed design of the country’s Step fusion prototype power plant and increasing the number of UK companies delivering fusion products and services.

The UKAEA said the 2026-2030 strategy for its national fusion laboratory builds on the UK government’s fusion strategy launched last month and aligns with the strategy of UKAEA Group’s subsidiary company, UK Fusion Energy Ltd, also published today.

The government said its strategy made the country the first to establish a clear national path towards commercial fusion energy in a bid to contribute to energy security. The strategy involves creating a market framework intended to attract private investment into fusion electricity.
