The UK prime minister’s office has told correspondents that Keir Starmer will sign off on plans to build two new nuclear power plants at Sizewell C and will also back a new generation of small modular reactors (SMRs) in a bid to spark economic growth.

Multiple news outlets in the UK reported that Starmer is set to formally approve the £20bn (€23bn, $25bn) investment in two new EPR units supplied by French state company EDF ahead of a planned government spending review in June.

The reports came after it was revealed on the UK government’s subsidies website that an additional £2.7bn had been committed by the government to the Sizewell C project on 30 March.
