Thorcon Power Indonesia has signed a memorandum of understanding with Indonesian utility Nusantara Power to explore the development and planning of a Thorcon 500 nuclear power plant project in an island region to the north of Jakarta.

Parent company Thorcon International, a Singapore-based nuclear power plant developer, said the signing marks the beginning of information exchange between the two parties on plans for a Thorcon advanced molten salt reactor (MSR) nuclear plant on Kelasa Island, part of the Bangka Belitung group of islands, about 700 km north of the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

The reactors are designed as part of a floating power plant that can be manufactured on an assembly line in a shipyard and delivered via barge.
