Assets in Switzerland’s decommissioning and waste disposal funds totalled just under CHF10bn (€10.6bn, $12.3bn) at the end of 2025 – an increase over CHF9.65bn at the end of 2024 and well above targets, Swissnuclear said.

Of the total amount, approximately CHF3.03bn is in the decommissioning fund, up from CHF2.98bn in 2024, and CHF6.96bn is in the waste disposal fund, up from CHF6.66bn in 2024.

According to Swissnuclear, the target figure for the decommissioning fund was CHF2.76bn and for the waste disposal fund CHF5.9bn. This puts the surplus in the decommissioning fund at about 9.8% and in the waste disposal fund at about 17.9%.

Swissnuclear, an industry group which represents nuclear power plant operators, said the level of funding “confirms the responsible financing strategy designed to secure funding for decommissioning and waste disposal costs over the long term”.
