The estimated cost of decommissioning Switzerland’s nuclear facilities and radioactive waste disposal is CHF23.6bn (€25.3bn, $28.3bn), according to a new cost study submitted by industry group Swissnuclear.

The group said in a statement that the 2026 cost study was submitted at the end of September to the Swiss administrative commission of the decommissioning and waste disposal fund, known as Stenfo.

The study estimated waste disposal costs at CHF19.5bn and decommissioning costs at CHF4.1bn, based on prices as of 1 January 2026.

Swissnuclear said the estimate includes expected project costs, opportunities, risk surcharges, forecast uncertainty and a general safety surcharge for decommissioning and the deep geological repository.
