Vattenfall’s two sites have five reactor units in commercial operation – two pressurised water reactors at Ringhals on Sweden’s western coast, and three boiling water reactors at Forsmark on the country’s eastern shores.
Vattenfall said the newly signed fuel contracts will take effect from 2024 but did not disclose any details of the value of the deals.
According to the company, the move continues the cooperation with “trusted suppliers” and is in line with a strategy to be “independent of individual suppliers and countries.”
On 24 February 2022, the day Russian troops entered the territory of neighbouring Ukraine, Vattenfall suspended any deliveries of Russian nuclear fuel until further notice.
A statement said at the time that the company’s procurement strategy was based on having multiple suppliers from different countries to guarantee the independence and security of fuel supply.
Russia’s Tvel was one of several international suppliers of finished fuel elements to Vattenfall. Three additional suppliers are Framatome and Westinghouse through its Swedish fuel manufacturing facility at Vasteras, Sweden, and US-Spanish joint venture GNF Enusa.
