The operator of the Almaraz and Trillio nuclear power stations in Spain is collaborating with French nuclear company Framatome on the possible commercial production at the Trillo power plant of the radioisotope lutetium-177 (Lu-177), which is used in nuclear medicine for the treatment of tumours.

According to the Madrid-based nuclear industry group Foro Nuclear, the project is in the preliminary stage with tests being carried out to determine the feasibility of Lu-177 production at the single-unit Trillo, in Guadalajara province, central Spain.

Plant operator Almaraz-Trillo Nuclear Power Plants (CNAT) said the process began in 2022 when a series of modifications were made to the plant to be able to produce Lu-177.
