Spain’s fleet of seven commercial nuclear power plants produced 20.8% of the electricity consumed in the country in 2021, showing its importance in the transition towards net zero, industry group Foro Nuclear said in its annual report.

This was a slight fall from 22.1% in 2020, but came during a year when six of the seven plants carried out scheduled refuelling outages that were longer than usual due to Covid-19 measures.

Foro Nuclear said net electricity generated by nuclear in 2021 was just over 54 TWh, about 3% less than the 55.7 TWh in 2020.
