Small modular reactors (SMRs) are a catalyst for increased interest in nuclear energy in Africa because they represent “a compelling solution” as they are more suitable for use in small electricity grids and have a lower upfront capital cost per unit and shorter construction times than large reactors, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said.
