SGE and power company ZE PAK have signed an agreement to establish a joint venture named PAK BWRX that will develop a nuclear power plant in Poland featuring six small modular reactors (SMRs) using BWRX-300 technology designed by GE Vernona Hitachi Nuclear Energy.

SGE, a nuclear plant project developer founded in 2019 by Polish billionaire Michał Sołowow, said in a statement that the project will support Polish industrial growth and strengthen energy security by deploying 1,800 MW of nuclear at the retiring Pątnów coal plant, owned by ZE PAK, about 240 km southwest of the capital Warsaw.

SGE said the partnership with ZE PAK addresses one of the biggest challenges facing Poland’s energy sector: replacing aging coal-fired power plants while meeting rapidly growing electricity demand.
