Russian state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom announced it has completed manufacturing and shipped the first RITM-200S small reactor unit for a new floating nuclear power unit being built for industrial operations in Russia’s Far East.

Rosatom described the move as a significant milestone in the development of its small-scale nuclear energy programme.

A statement said the reactor was produced at the ZiO-Podolsk plant near Moscow, part of Rosatom’s machine-building division. It will be installed on a lead floating power unit known as PEB-106 (Floating Power Unit-106).

Rosatom said completion of the reactor allows the project to move to the next construction stage, including installation of power equipment inside the vessel hull.
