2 Jun (NucNet): Atomstroyexport Group (ASE Group), the engineering division of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, has signed a general framework agreement and a credit agreement with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) for the construction of Units 5 and 6 at the Kudankulam nuclear power station in Tamil Nadu state, southern India.
The agreement details the obligations of the two sides, the project’s cost and “other important conditions” of cooperation, ASE said in a statement on its website.
ASE Group president Valery Limarenko said all formalities have been concluded and the project has been transferred to “the practical phase”.
In December 2009, Russia and India signed an initial agreement for Russia to build four nuclear reactor units at Kudankulam in addition to the existing Kudankulam-1 and -2.
In April 2014, Russia and India signed a final agreement on the construction of Kudankulam-3 and -4.
ASE said pouring of first concrete for Units 3 and 4 is planned for the end of June 2017.
All four new units at Kudankulam will be of the Russian VVER-1000 PWR design.
