UK company aiming to deploy global fleet of nuclear plants
Rolls-Royce SMR has signed an exclusive partnership agreement with Siemens Energy to design, manufacture, install and commission turbine systems for a global fleet of small modular reactors (SMRs), a statement said.
UK-based Rolls-Royce said the partnership aims to reduce risks in its SMR development programme while using Siemens Energy UK’s existing manufacturing base. Siemens’ global presence will support deployment in multiple international markets.
Rolls-Royce SMR has said its SMR will be factory-built, enabling easier transportation, reduced completion risk and increased certainty on construction schedules. The plant will have an output of 470 MW.
The Rolls-Royce SMR has been selected for deployment in the Czech Republic and is under consideration for projects in the UK and Sweden. It is one of four companies going through a technology selection process for SMRs in the UK.
In December 2024, Czech state power company ČEZ announced it will join forces in SMR deployment by taking an equity investment in Rolls-Royce SMR.
In 2023, Rolls-Royce SMR awarded a contract to Westinghouse Electric Company to develop the nuclear fuel design for the Rolls-Royce SMR.
