The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has issued Holtec International with a final licence to build and operate a consolidated interim storage facility (CISF) for used nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste in the US state of New Mexico.

The facility will be built on land provided by Holtec partner the Eddy Lea Energy Alliance, a regional economic development authority.

The CISF will provide a significant step on the path to the federal government’s long-standing obligation for disposition of used nuclear fuel by providing a centralised facility for storage of used nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste until a permanent solution is available.
