Romania’s prime minister Ludovic Orban has ordered the setting up of a committee to consider options for the construction of Units 3 and 4 of the Cernavodă nuclear power station.

Press reports in Romania said the main objectives of the committee are the analysis and substantiation of decisions and measures that need to be taken.

The Romanian nuclear industry association Romatom welcomed the decision to set up a committee. It said nuclear production needed to be increased, especially in the context of European decarbonisation policies and environmental targets.

Nuclear provides about 18% of Romania’s electricity and 33% of low-carbon electricity, Romatom said, adding investment and nuclear can increase energy security and contribute to the country’s post Covid-19 recovery.
